Democrats appear closer than ever to a historic substitution at the top of the ticket just a month from their nominating convention and less than four months from a presidential election. Reports emerged Thursday that President Joe Biden’s closest political ally – former President Barack Obama – is raising doubts about the viability of Biden’s reelection bid.

The development comes after calls for him to step aside have spread in recent days to Biden’s inner circle, with Rep. Adam Schiff of California, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer all making statements publicly and behind closed doors. Analysts now suggest the week’s events have forced Biden’s hand and that a decision to reconsider his candidacy is likely coming, leaving Biden and the larger Democratic Party bracing for what could be an ugly aftermath.
