Juries reached a pair of landmark decisions this week ruling against Meta in cases over failures to protect the nation’s youth and claims their platforms were designed to be addictive, contributing to mental health harms that could open the industry to more lawsuits. The decisions come at a pivotal moment for the tech industry as public officials test the limits of long-standing legal protections that have shielded companies from liability. With thousands of lawsuits pending across the U.S., the outcome of the trials could redefine how social media companies are held accountable for harms tied to their platforms and force changes to the way they operate.

Social media companies have mostly been able to escape legal scrutiny because of the protections of Section 230, which protects platforms from being held legally responsible for user-generated content.
