NULab Faculty In July’s News

The research and public engagement of NULab faculty members has been spotlighted by multiple news outlets this month. Here is a roundup of the latest stories featuring NULab faculty:

At the top of the month, NULab affiliate faculty Alan Mislove (Professor, Khoury College of Computer Sciences) was featured by News@Northeastern in a profile of three Northeastern faculty researching data privacy. The article highlighted Mislove’s research that found Facebook’s algorithm for advertisements still discriminates between demographic groups, despite the company’s recent modifications.

NULab affiliate faculty Moya Bailey (Assistant Professor, Cultures, Societies, and Global Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies) was highlighted by police misconduct attorney Andrea Ritchie in an interview with KERA News (NPR’s North Texas affiliate). Ritchie referred to Bailey’s original concept of “misogynoir” to explain why Black women have not been the focus of mainstream discussions about police brutality.

NULab co-director David Lazer was interviewed by The Wall Street Journal for a story about differences between Republican and Democratic lawmakers’ Twitter activity. Lazer noted that legislators have become more active on Twitter because of a preference for avoiding reliance on traditional news media channels, and a decline in local media outlets.

Last but not least, NULab core faculty Alicia Sasser Modestino (Associate Professor, Economics, and Public Policy and Urban Affairs; Associate Director, Dukakis Center) was featured in The Washington Post and The Boston Globe for leading a study that found a shortage of childcare will hinder the post-pandemic economic recovery. Modestino was also interviewed by KUNC (NPR’s Northern Colorado affiliate) in a segment on cities considering reallocation of police funds to summer youth employment programs. She said that emerging research suggests summer youth employment programs may reduce socioeconomic inequalities.
