Sarah Shapiro

MA in World History

Sarah Shapiro graduated from the University of Vermont in the winter of 2022 with her BA as a double major in History and Political Science. From her studies at the University of Vermont, as well as her work experience interning with both local Vermont politicians such as Representative Casey Toof and Senator Chuck Schumer in her home state of NY, she learned the importance and significance of making history accessible and utilizing the lessons that history has for the present. She also found that the pursuit of studying history requires bringing people from the margins to the center to better contextualize issues and stories. In her senior year, she wrote seminar papers on Iran and Japan to discover and reinterpret the nation’s story through a woman’s perspective, centering everyday existences and focusing on “hidden” histories. She is eager to continue her work as a master’s student in the World History program by studying areas such as the Middle East and Asia and continuing to recenter and amplify marginalized voices of those areas.
