Vibhustuti (Tuti) Thapa

Sociology PhD Candidate

Vibhustuti Thapa (she/they) is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Northeastern University. They joined the program in the Fall of 2022 with a BA in Psychology from Colby-Sawyer College and an MA in Liberal Studies (concentration in Globalization Studies) from Dartmouth College. They also received an en route MA from Northeastern University in 2023. Tuti’s research examines the relationships between people, food and food systems, and the environment. Employing qualitative and ethnographic methods, their dissertation explores how small-scale South Asian migrant and refugee farmers navigate their livelihoods, agricultural knowledge, and relationships within and outside peri-urban farms in Massachusetts. Their work also attends to the social, material, and sensory-affective dimensions of small-scale agriculture as well as food sovereignty and food justice discourses in contexts of displacement and migration. Prior to Northeastern, Tuti worked in interdisciplinary fields in Nepal and the US. Their work ranged from curatorial research on collaborative multimedia art projects, including artwork production support and documentation, to teaching, language justice advocacy, and community economic development during COVID-19.
