Dr. Shaun Gabbidon to visit Northeastern as 2024 Schulman Speaker

The annual Schulman Lecture Series invites prominent scholars, community practitioners, and students to discuss issues on race and justice. This year’s speaker, Dr. Shaun Gabbidon, will visit Northeastern to share his lecture titled “Shopping While Black: Consumer Racial Profiling in America,” which explores the generally neglected racial profiling that occurs in retail settings. This problem affects a large number of racial/ethnic minorities, and causes real harm to the victims, such as the emotional trauma attached to being excessively monitored in stores and, in the worst-case scenarios, falsely accused of shoplifting.

Dr. Gabbidon is a Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice and the author of more than 100 scholarly publications including 75 peer-reviewed articles and 13 books. His most recent book, Shopping While Black: Consumer Racial Profiling in America, won the 2022 ACJS Outstanding Book Award. Dr. Gabbidon was recently selected as the Faculty Scholar Medal recipient for the social sciences, Penn State’s highest award for scholarship.
