Ahmet Yukleyen

Ahmet Yukleyen recently joined International Affairs to teach Middle East Studies. Previously, he was Croft Associate Professor of Anthropology and International Studies at the University of Mississippi (2006-2015). He received his Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from Boston University (2006). Dr. Yukleyen’s dissertation research in Germany and the Netherlands (2003-2004) was funded by grants from Wenner Gren Foundation, United States Institute of Peace, and Dutch Council of Higher Education. He received his MA degree in International Politics from University of Denver (1998-2000).
Dr. Yukleyen’s book titled “Localizing Islam in Europe: Turkish Islamic Communities in Germany and the Netherlands” was published by Syracuse University Press in 2012. He published several articles in journals including the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Contemporary Islam, Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, Immigrants and Minorities, Public Choice, and Turkish Studies. His research interests include anthropology of religion, ethnicity, Muslims in Europe, Islamic movements, and the Middle East.

Middle East Studies

Concentrates on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries of the “Middle East” (Arab World, Israel, Turkey, and Iran), the links with southwest Asia (Pakistan, Afghanistan), and U.S. engagement with the Middle East. This course seeks to provide students with effective interdisciplinary analytical skills as well as historical, political, ethical, social, cultural, religious, and economic perspectives on the Middle East.
