Katy Shorey
Associate Teaching Professor of Philosophy
Katy Shorey is assistant teaching professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion. Her research focuses on criteria for evaluating the success of scientific explanations. In particular, how to articulate a general account of explanation that specifies what is necessary for explanation, and the criteria for judging between better and worse explanations. In the scholarship of teaching and learning, Katy’s current work is in collaboration with the Faculty Scholars Program through Northeastern University’s Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning through Research. Katy’s research is aimed at gathering and analyzing evidence of how a series of active learning and problem-based assignments contribute to learning outcomes within philosophy courses.

Debating Ethical Controversies
PHIL 1112
Introduces students to the fundamentals of moral theory; ethical reasoning; social and political philosophy; as well as theories of social, political, and institutional change. Emphasizes in-depth ethical analysis and evaluation of the issues studied, their social and historical sources and context, as well as the way in which responses to them can and should lead to institutional and policy changes. Offers students an opportunity to be selected for an off-campus competitive debate experience. This course is modeled after the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl debates on current social and ethical issues.
