Sharing Community Histories: A Network for Faculty from Boston Area Institutions
Call for Applications for Engaged Scholars/Teachers in the Arts and Humanities and Related Fields
The Northeastern Humanities Center, in collaboration with the Reckonings Project, NULab for Digital Humanities and Computational Social Science, AHA Lab, and the Center for Digital Scholarship at Northeastern, invites applications for an 11-month program for Engaged Scholars from Boston-area higher education institutions working in the arts and humanities and related fields, running from February to December 2026.
Program Goals:
- Foster and/or seed responsible community/university co-creation and co-curation in service of communities that surround Boston area campuses with emphasis on history, story-telling, archiving, the arts, and design.
- Foster exchange of practices, digital tools, experiences, and knowledge created with community partners.
- Create a community of engaged scholars across institutions.
- Recognize faculty members for engaged scholarship and teaching.
- Provide pathways to experiential learning opportunities for students from a broad range of backgrounds and majors to enhance their skill sets in ethical practice and collaboration, as well as story-telling and digital tools.
- Integrate AI tools responsibly into this work.
Program Benefits:
- Small summer stipend for the faculty member in Summer 2026 of $3,500
- Access to payments/stipends for community partners of up to $1,500
- Access to regular office hours with Reckonings and NULab staff and Humanities Center digital archivist for community advice and digital support
- Affiliation with the Northeastern Humanities Center
- Access to collaborative space in the Center for Digital Scholarship in Snell Library at Northeastern Boston
- Access to workshops run by the Humanities Center, the NULab for Texts, Maps and Networks,
Program Design:
- Virtual Launch meeting in February 2026
- Faculty attend two in-person workshops at Northeastern from a number of options in the course of the year
- Four-hour in-person gathering at Northeastern Boston on Wednesday, June 3, 2026
- 2 brief reports, with quotes from community partners and as applicable students,
Applications
Successful applicants should
- Be employed as a full-time faculty member at a Boston area institution of higher education
- Have an active research/scholarship/teaching agenda that contributes to their field/s and seek to incorporate community partnerships (community can be defined broadly, including grassroots, nonprofit and business organizations; local educational and governmental agencies; neighborhoods; or individuals with a common interest or identity)
- Have an interest in learning more about engaged scholarship and learning
- Be committed to working with faculty across disciplines and with community stakeholders
- Have the capacity to effectively communicate and disseminate the results of their research and engaged scholarship to public, academic, and other external audiences
- Be able to commit to actively participating in the eleven-month program, including making progress on a new or existing project related to their engaged scholarship/teaching
- Have a brief statement of support from their department chair or dean
