Students will study the role of social services and nonprofit organizations in one of the most diverse, global and dynamic cities in the world. This experience will challenge students to consider how well developed and resourced urban areas are addressing social and economic injustices. One of the major themes of this year’s program will be urban social isolation in the age of hyper-connectedness. Students will also explore the historical roots of social welfare in the UK and the ways in which they informed responses to social problems in the United States. This experience will encourage students to consider and compare the experiences of immigrant communities and services. This 8-credit hour experience will blend community engagement and research for students preparing to practice in the social change arena. Recognizing that all students have different academic needs the program will offer three courses. All students will be required to enroll in the intensive internship course similar to the one that human services students take here in Boston. They will be placed in a non-profit or social service organization for 25-30 hours a week working with staff and clients in the organization. This experience will fulfill the internship requirement for the major. Students will then elect to take one of two courses the first being our Human Services Capstone course – where students will conceptualize and develop a research paper focused on their anticipated professional interest area through an evidence-based practice critique, participate in lectures by the faculty and guest speakers, and discuss emerging issues in the field both in the UK and US. The second-course option will be the Intercultural Studies through Human Services course – where students will conceptualize and develop a comparative research analyzing UK responses vs. US responses to a social issue or population need.
