The Case of White Opioids – Jules Netherland, Ph.D.

Dr. Netherland will discuss the case of white opioids and American drug policy.

Date: 11/18/2019

Time: 1:35pm to 2:40pm
Location: 310R Renaissance Park

Dr. Netherland’s work explores the multiple strategies which engage the academy in drug policy reform.

How does the white washing of the opioid crisis engender cultural representations and policy responses that maintain the innocence of the white drug user in ways intended to keep them out of the criminal justice system?

Dr. Netherland will discuss the case of white opioids – the synthetic opiates Oxycontin ® and Suboxone ® that gained notoriety in the 1990’s in connection with epidemic prescription medication abuse among white, middle class Americans – to address the racialization of American drug policy.
