Taylor Tharp – Why Human Services

taylor Tharp

“I chose to study human services because I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world doing what I love to do, which is working with people and improving their well being through service. My co-op at Boston Scholar Athletes and internship at Year Up Boston both solidified my life’s passion and future career goal: serving at-risk youth and equipping them with the skills and services they need to achieve success and reach their full potential.

Upon graduation, my goal is to work for a nonprofit with the mission to eliminate the achievement gap plaguing our nation’s youth. Incredible disparity exists with regards to a family’s socioeconomic status (SES) and the children’s consequent academic achievement. I believe that every child should have the equal opportunity to learn, grow and develop into contributing members of society. It is not socially just that due to a difference in SES some children are twelve to fourteen months behind their peers before they walk through school doors. Northeastern has not only helped me discover my passion to help solve this societal issue, but it has also enabled me to gain the experience, skills and knowledge that I will need to effectively address this problem in my future career and help change the world.”

-Taylor, fourth year Human Services major with American Sign Language & Psychology minors
