As part of its list of recommendations for “What to Read, Listen To, and Watch to Better Understand Racism Against Black People In The US,” News@Northeastern recently featured #HashtagActivism: Networks of Race and Gender Justice, co-authored by NULab core faculty Moya Bailey and Brooke Foucault Welles with Sarah Jackson from the University of Pittsburgh. #HashtagActivism analyzes “how marginalized groups use Twitter to advance counter-narratives, preempt political spin, and build diverse networks of dissent” (MIT Press). The book was featured by News@Northeastern because of its resonance with current events, specifically the role that social media networks have played in supporting activism on-the-ground against the murders of black men and women by police officers.
News@Northeastern also recommended an interview with Professors Bailey and Welles about their book on an episode of the “What’s New” podcast, hosted by Dan Cohen, Vice Provost for Information Collaboration and Dean, University Library.
