Mai’a Cross: EU, Brexit and Woman Who Empower

Professor Mai’a Cross was recently featured on a panel at the university’s “Women Who Empower” annual summit. The event is designed to promote diversity and inclusion, and empower diverse voices. The panel included Emmy Award winning producer Nina Fialko who was one of the producers of the film, “The Great Hack” (Netflix).  This groundbreaking documentary helped to expose the ways in which Cambridge Analytica used Facebook to influence the outcome of both the Brexit referendum and the 2016 US election through micro-targetting and psy-ops.  This subject is closely related to Mai’a Cross’s research on the European Union.  Professor Cross  offered a “pop-up” course on Brexit during Spring 2019, and regularly speaks in the US and Europe about the potential impact of Brexit on EU integration.  In 2017, Professor Cross also wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post’s opinion section entitled, “Don’t be fooled by the U.K. election: There’s nothing democratic about Brexit.”
