“I believe that my experience at HOPe has allowed me to live life with a more open mind.”
– Julia Alvear
Co-op Term: Spring 2025
Position: Activities Lead
Employer: House of Possibilities
House of Possibilities (HOPe) is a Boston nonprofit that helps adults with disabilities reintegrate into the workforce. Julia’s days involved leading members through morning volunteer placements, running afternoon activities and self-designed lessons, and checking in on members’ emotional regulation at the day’s end.
Julia’s time at HOPe taught her important lessons about her future career path. While she valued the personal connections she built with clients, she noticed she wanted a balance between direct care and office tasks. This led her to pursue an internship at the Department of Family Protective Services.
Julia had a deeply rewarding experience at HOPe. She left work each day feeling satisfied, having built genuine connections with members and played an active role in their growth. She was trusted with real responsibility from her very first week, treated as a full-time team member rather than a typical intern. She found the work consistently fulfilling and fun. This experience left her with a broader, more open-minded perspective on the world.
