Building community, one welcome at a time
As we move into the 2026–2027 academic year, it’s a good time to reflect on the year we just built together — our academic minor and our intellectual community, side by side.
We hosted four events last year with our collaborating partners: the Latinx Student Center, the LGBTQI+ Student Center, World Languages and Cultures, and the English Department. Our September welcome was especially well attended, thanks to our long-standing relationship with the PODER program. Every year, we welcome first-year students with open arms, because PODER cares for one of our biggest LLACS constituencies at Northeastern: first-generation, first-year, and undocumented/DACA students.
Our minor is only four classes — and ripe with possibility for any student to learn with and about Latinx, Latin American, Caribbean, and Central American histories, literatures, and cultures.
THE YEAR AHEAD
New voices, new courses
The Past is Future Present is a fitting framework for LLACS in 2026–2027. Our future includes more course offerings than ever — a chance to think about Latin American literature in translation, sport and spectatorship, Latinx literature, and more.

Dr. Alan West-Duran
We also said goodbye to one of our founding faculty upon his retirement. After 25 years of service to Northeastern students as teacher-scholar and founding director of the LLACS program, his intellectual legacy lives on in our program’s history and numerous publications. A native of Cuba who came to the U.S. as a boy, he has chronicled and translated hundreds of texts, including the Penguin edition of A Nation of Women: An Early Feminist Speaks Out by Luisa Capetillo.
