Marie Jean Phillip Competition

General Information

  • This year’s theme is “Our Deaf Planet”.
  • All poems, stories and art submissions must focus on this theme.
  • All stories and poems must be told in a formal manner. They must be practiced and delivered in a single telling [no editing].
  • Stories must have a clear introduction of characters, a conflict of some sort,
    a climax, and a resolution.
  • All participants must be Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Groups

  • Students Ages 8 & Under
  • Students Ages 9-12
  • Students Ages 13-18
  • Special Needs Students Ages 12 & Under
  • Special Needs Students Ages 13-18
  • Open Competition Ages 19 & Above (open to students 19 and older, faculty, staff, and/or members of the local Deaf Community)

Rubric

Note: Submissions must be under 3 minutes and art must be 2 dimensional.

Age Groups

Students Ages 8 & Under

ASL Poetry

The poem must use no more than three handshapes, one of which MUST be the “1” handshape.

The poem can deal with some aspect of Deaf History, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL, but MUST focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

ASL Story Telling

The story must contain at least two characters. The story must end with some sort of moral or lesson.

The story can deal with some aspect of Deaf History, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL, but MUST focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

Deaf Art

Artwork can relate to the use of hands, Deaf History, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL. It MUST focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

All entries must include a written or videotaped statement explaining the work.

Medium: any

Students Ages 9 – 12

The poem must use no more than five handshapes, two of which must be “1” and “S” handshapes.

The poem can deal with some aspect of Deaf History, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL, but MUST focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

The story must be historical fiction.

It must include the student as one of the important characters.

Ideally, it would include a well–‐known Deaf person as a main character.

The story can deal with some aspect of Deaf History, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL, but MUST focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

Artwork can focus on an important event in Deaf History, on the use of hands, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL. It MUST focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

All entries must include a written or videotaped statement explaining the work.

Medium: any

Students Ages 13 – 18

The poem must use no more than seven handshapes, three of which must be “1”, “S” and “F” ; the others are of the student’s choosing.

The poem can deal with some aspect of Deaf History, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL, but MUST focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

The story must include the student as one of the characters.

The story must have at least one nationally-known Deaf person as one of its characters.

The story can deal with some aspect of Deaf History, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL, but MUST focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

The theme must feature an invented device to benefit Deaf people, or explore the theme of Communication, Deaf History, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL. It must also focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

All entries must include a written or videotaped statement explaining the work.

Students with Special Needs Ages 12 & Under

Poems for this group have no specific or limited formation rules. The poem can deal with some aspect of Deaf History, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL, but MUST focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

The story must be historical fiction.

It must include the student as one of the important characters returning in time.

The story can deal with some aspect of Deaf History, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL, but MUST focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

Artwork must deal with some aspect of Deaf History, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, or the artistic beauty and richness of ASL. It must also focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.

The artwork must deal with the Deaf experience or reflect the minority experience. It must also focus on “Our Deaf Planet” theme.
