In a response to concerns about missing migrant children, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has recently stated DHS’s responsibility for addressing child trafficking ends once unaccompanied minors are transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services.
Critics are arguing that DHS should maintain oversight to prevent exploitation after transfer. Some are concerned that many of these children are being trafficked by criminal organizations.
This discussion also raises larger considerations regarding the functionality of the immigration system as a whole.
Amy Farrell, director and professor of criminology and criminal justice and WGSS affiliated faculty member at Northeastern University, told Newsweek that neither Republican nor Democratic policies are “particularly effective as anti-trafficking efforts.”
