Preparing local youth for the future.

Since 2015, the Dukakis Center has partnered with cities to evaluate, replicate, and scale summer youth employment programs. In 2023, we put research into action, launching a summer jobs program at both our Boston and Oakland campus locations. This SYEP micro-site is designed to serve as a resource hub for both practitioners and researchers to learn more about the latest research evidence, tested best practices, and innovative program models from cities across the nation. Please sign up to join our community of practice quarterly meetings for more information.

Research Evidence

Finding out what works

Using rigorous evaluation methods, researchers have shows that summer youth employment programs reduce violent crime, increase high school graduation, and boost employment and wages for up to 5 years after participating in the program. Read about the latest research evidence published in policy articles, public reports, and academic journals.

Best Practices

Providing actionable recommendations for programs

With support from Arnold Ventures, we partnered with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and the Brookings Institution to develop a detailed manual that offers a practical guide for policymakers, funders, and program leaders interested in starting or strengthening SYEPs. This living document serves as a basis for our virtual community of practice that meets quarterly to create lasting opportunities for youth spanning 20 major U.S. cities.

SYEP Program Models
