Director’s Welcome

Welcome to the Global Asian Studies program, Northeastern’s hub for in-depth and rigorous research on Asia and Asian America. I am Director of Global Asian Studies and Associate Professor of Anthropology. I primarily do research in and on cities, and am trained as an anthropologist of Indonesia. I recently completed a book on Jakarta, the biggest city in the world. 

Global Asian Studies is a growing and dynamic interdisciplinary program of study that houses a major and minor for undergraduate students who have keen interests in Asia and Asian America. Our award-winning faculty offer courses on East Asia, South Asia, South East Asia, and Asian Diasporas, and span the fields of Anthropology, Architecture, Economics, English, Film and Media, History, Journalism, Political Science, Public Policy, Sociology, Science and Technology Studies, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Urban Studies, and World Languages and Cultures. The program strives to create a robust and engaged community through our regular lecture series and other events. We support students through student awards and research opportunities. We are pleased to collaborate with student groups, cultural centers, and schools, departments, and programs across the university.
