Gen Z is trading out Girl Boss and ‘Lean In’ feminism for the new “The stay-at-home girlfriend” era. The lifestyle is filled with afternoon pilates, sleeping in, and letting your boyfriend worry about bills. Gen Z doesn’t want the 9 to 5 job hustle culture, and instead wants a more fulfilling and creative career.
While their critique of the 9 to 5 work culture is a valid one, considering the current political climate which is claiming hustle culture burnout is the cause for declining birthrates, the lifestyle may not be one to immediately get behind. Expert Suzanna Danuta Walters, Northeastern Professor of Sociology and Director of WGSS, highlights how these lifestyles are all manufactured and continuously reformed by pop culture to maintain dominance. While the lifestyle may seem silly, its presence online could lead to a significant shift in work culture.
