Northeastern University ASL Interpreter Rates
Providers will be paid as “Independent Contractors.” Our interpreter rates are calculated based on the following factors:
- Level of credentials (eg. State-screened, nationally certified, etc.)
- Years of holding certification
- Additional factors include Masters or PhD and assignment location (in person vs remote)

Certification documentation and a copy of your resume must be provided prior to assignments.
Nationally Certified Hearing Interpreter | $65/hour |
Nationally Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) | $65/hour |
Deaf Interpreter | $50/hour |
MCDHH Screened Hearing Interpreter | $45/hour |
NIC/CASLI Written/Knowledge Exam | + $5/hour |
Master’s Degree / PhD | + $3/hour |
For every 5 years Nationally Certified | + $3/hour |
On Site/ In – person Assignments * | + $5/hour |
Close Vision/ Deaf Blind * | + $5/hour |
*does not apply to all jobs, specific to each assignment
Prep time is billed at your base rate, not the on-site/in-person rate.
Billing
General Billing Guidelines
Interpreters are paid a 2-hour minimum *initial provider appearance fee, per assignment.
Mileage/Parking
Mileage and parking are not compensated for Northeastern University jobs.
Prep Time for Academic Classes (Interpreters Only)
Interpreters are paid one hour of prep per week for each class. Additional prep time can be requested if needed for complex courses and must be pre-negotiated. Prep time is typically not offered for ASL language classes but can be requested.
Invoicing
All Invoices should include the following information:
- Invoice number
- Date of invoice
- Dates and names of events
- Start and end times
- Rate per hour
- Total hours billed
- Name, mailing address and email address
For assignments booked through the ASL & Interpreting Education Program, please email a copy of your W-9 Form and invoice to Kathleen Perry, k.perry@northeastern.edu. For all assignments booked through the Disability Resource Center, please email a copy of your w9 and invoice to Betsy Ireland, e.ireland@northeastern.edu.
