Self-Directed Modules
The self-directed online learning modules are delivered through our virtual classroom space. Access to these modules is free. We recommend that you progress through them in order, because the content builds upon the previous module(s).
Learn more about available modules below. CEUs are available for each module. For anyone interested in creating a Community of Practice (CoP) and earning additional CEUs through independent study, a Curriculum Guide for each module is provided. For instructions on how to provide the CoP, watch the pre-recorded webinar, Creating a Community of Practice through CALI’s Self-Paced Modules.
Modules range from 1.0 to 1.2 CEUs

Module 4 – Decision Points: Working with Consumers Exhibiting Atypical Language
Units of Learning
Ten free Units of Learning (UOLs) ranging from .6 -.7 CEUs are offered. Each UOL was designed to be taken over a two-week period. You can move through them more quickly or take them over a longer period, but we recommend that you do not take a UOL in one sitting or that you stretch a single UOL out for longer than a month. There is no cost for taking the modules.
These UOLs were designed in a manner that allows for independent learning, but some interpreters will benefit from working in pairs or small groups. There are assignments, activities, and reflection opportunities where learners may benefit from reviewing one another’s work, and from the rich discussions that may arise from including a variety of perspectives. Feel free to take these on your own, in pairs, or in a small group.

Conversation Series
These conversations include a variety of perspectives—Deaf perspectives, Coda perspectives, hearing perspectives, and more. The conversations provide rich insights you might not be exposed to if these individuals were talking with you directly. It is their relationships with one another and the communities in which they live that allow them to speak openly and frankly with one another—always with mutual respect and regard. If you have not yet watched the Conversation Series: Interpreters on interpreting with people who use atypical language webinar, we strongly recommend you start with that as it includes a panel discussion and an introduction to the six Conversation Series videos. The Conversation Series videos are accompanied with a Learner Handbook and Curriculum Guide.
Unfolding Scenarios
Unfolding Scenarios consists of 12 interpreting scenarios, five structured from the perspective of a Deaf interpreter (DI) and seven from the perspective of a hearing interpreter. Each scenario includes five to seven decision points where the interpreter must decide how to proceed.
