Unfolding Scenarios consists of 12 interpreting scenarios, five structured from the perspective of a Deaf interpreter (DI) and seven from the perspective of a hearing interpreter. Each scenario includes five to seven decision points where the interpreter must decide how to proceed.

In addition to the 12 stand-alone scenarios, eight of the scenarios include additional video footage presenting sample interpreter responses and reflections (Scenarios 1, 2, 3. 6, 7, 10, 11, and 12). Two interpreters respond to each of the decision points followed by a discussion where they reflect on their decision-making process. These eight videos provide an example of how students and practitioners can engage with the Unfolding Scenarios to practice the application of critical thinking and ethical reasoning. Scenarios 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 11, and 12 include Deaf and hearing model interpreters. Scenario 10, a VRS call with hearing interpreters only, has two hearing, heritage signers as the model interpreters.

The videos can be found by clicking the button above and via links in the accompanying documents below. Some are also incorporated in CALI online learning modules. Independent learners may download the Learner Handbook to guide their learning experience. Interpreting educators, mentors, and supervisors are encouraged to explore the Curriculum Guide package, which provides the theoretical foundation for the project, an overview of the scenarios, and suggested instructional activities.

CEUs for Independent Learning

With guidance from an approved RID Sponsor, you could design an independent study activity around these Unfolding Scenarios. The Curriculum Guide includes Suggested Activities, Reflection and Discussion Formats, and Scenario Analysis sections that could be used not only by interpreting educators, but also by a study group you could form with your peers to work through the scenarios. Or consider using the Engaging with the Scenarios section of the Learner Handbook to design an independent study.

The first step is to search for an approved RID Sponsor at https://myaccount.rid.org/Public/Search/Sponsor.aspx. Be sure to select “Yes” in the Independent Study drop-down menu.
