HCL Major is the interdisciplinary program in History, Culture, and Law (HCL) is aimed at students who wish to address major social questions through a grounding in the interconnection of law, history, and culture and an understanding of the dangers of treating these as separate realms of human activity. Whether they aim at careers in law, government, policy, or social action, such students will benefit from understanding the ways that precedent (legal history) and cultural context (social history) shape every interpretation and effect of legal action.
Students will develop their analytic skills by critically examining and researching legal processes, legal traditions and norms, human rights, social justice, and the evolution of law-related organizations through a humanistic lens.
