Job Summary
The Resiliency Data Analyst within the MBTA’s Department of Energy and Environment will be responsible for maintaining geospatial data for the MBTA’s use on climate change-related projects, mapping and analyzing both MBTA asset data and geographic data, visualizing data, and creating internal and public-facing maps. The Resiliency Data Analyst will work with MBTA staff within the Environmental Department, the Climate Team within the General Manager’s Office, Engineering, Capital Programs, Security & Emergency Management, Risk Management, Engineering & Maintenance and additional staff across the agency to both communicate climate risk and ensure that the latest and most up to date climate data is being referenced in all projects and in official MBTA documents, plans and policies. This is a key position will provide essential inputs for capital projects and internal decision-making, assist the MBTA in meeting its regulatory commitments and obligations under EO 569 and EO 594, and contribute towards meeting the agency’s strategic goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and making transit service more resilient to disruptions from climate change.Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct spatial, statistical and/or cartographic analysis related to climate change for the Environmental Department and other MBTA departments (as needed):
- Create maps, graphics, and visualize climate change data and climate vulnerability assessment results to communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Working in concert with the Manager of Climate Resilience and the Deputy Director of Climate Resilience, develop model(s), sketch(es) or concept drawing(s) for projects (e.g. translating hand-sketches into computer graphics), that (1) help facilitate decision-making, especially to highlight a climate change impact, or vulnerability, and/or (2) aid in communicating with internal and external stakeholders.
- Prepare visual material for reports, slideshows, presentations, and other needs in both digital and print formats.
- Create ArcGIS story maps; provide support for the creation of these presentations.
- Keep up to date with latest mapping software, especially ArcGIS and Google Earth.
- Keep up to date with latest modeling and visualization software such as Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino 3D, SketchUp.
- Use Adobe Creative Cloud Software (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Photoshop) to develop graphics for the department to use; develop presentation templates; meet other cross-department climate change resilience communication needs.
- Maintain database of climate change data for the MBTA:
- Using appropriate data management software (Sharepoint, Network Drives, ArcCatalog, other database software) maintain relevant data sets for MBTA Climate Resilience Activities and Projects.
- Keep data organized.
- Stay up to date on latest climate science data, including but not limited to what is used by the Office of Climate Science within the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs.
- Direct all project managers/ MBTA staff towards using latest and most-appropriate climate science data.
- Ensure all projects are using the latest MBTA asset and climate change data:
- Coordinate with Office of Document Management, MBTA Asset Management, MBTA Real estate (managers of OREAD LandTracker), and other departments as needed, to obtain the latest asset data for MBTA climate vulnerability assessments and other climate resilience related projects.
- Disseminate latest asset information to Project Managers and Consultant teams.
- Generate data layers used by evaluators of the MBTA’s Capital Investment Plan to facilitate climate-informed decision-making.
- Collect data generated by Climate Resilience Projects and Disseminate to appropriate departments/ teams within the MBTA:
- Organize asset data being collected (if any) by Climate Vulnerability Assessments.
- Ensure data is of consistent quality and in the correct format to be sent back to relevant department for processing.
- Coordinate information going out from the MBTA to 3rd parties about climate resilience or other climate-related inquiries:
- Handle data requests from 3rd parties (i.e. Army Corps of Engineers; City of Boston) to ensure latest/ most accurate information is being disseminated.
- Coordinate with Capital Program and Environmental Permitting to ensure consistent use of climate data in projects:
- Review existing design directives and design standards for Climate resilience, especially for data references.
- Review Environmental Checklists to ensure these are using and referencing the appropriate climate data.
- Review additional policies and plans to ensure appropriate data references are present.
- Participate in other program activities:
- Maintain subject matter expertise on climate resilience for transit systems and serve as internal consultant on this topic to internal resilience staff and other MBTA departments.
- Participate, as needed, in external stakeholder meetings with other state agencies, non-profits, regional planning organizations: especially those pertaining to climate data.
- Visit work sites and/or attend off-site meetings throughout the MBTA service area. Attend field trips to see infrastructure up-close and to develop knowledge of transit assets.
- Collaborate with other analysts on knowledge-sharing, cross-training, and joint support of cross-division projects.
- Maintain Right-Of-Way and all other relevant safety certifications.
- Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner consistent with the Authority’s “Driven by Customer Service” quality standard.
- Work any and all shifts as assigned or directed.
- Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority while building and maintaining an effective relationship with employees
- Assist in the management of a workforce by ensuring the fair and consistent application and strict adherence to the rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the Authority including the EEO, Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment and Anti-Retaliation policies.
- Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.
Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in GIS, Geography, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Transportation, Data Science, or related field.
- Two (2) years of experience in geospatial analysis, cartography, urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, engineering, science communication, analytics or other related fields.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Database and PowerPoint, Geographic Information Systems, Google Earth.
- Familiarity with one of these visualization software – Rhino3D, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revvit, and/or Civil3D – or other equivalent software.
- Effective professional written and communication skills.

- The ability to effectively communicate with customers, employees and vendors.
