As the United States enters an era in which the number of minoritized students will represent a majority of the student population, ensuring the safety and educational progress of students who have been historically marginalized and continue to be discriminated against is paramount. Of course, addressing violence and bullying that occurs within schools for all youth is key towards sustaining a system that is supposed to facilitate positive academic outcomes; however, acknowledging and addressing the safety and educational inequalities is also a pressing step towards attaining educational success. Although there has been increasing efforts to ensure safety in schools by target hardening and increasing social control, the collateral consequences of criminalization has detrimentally impacted minoritized student populations. It is also important to consider comprehensive approaches to school safety while considering and ameliorating inequalities is an important step towards educational justice.
This in-person event is complimentary but registration is required. Lunch will be provided for those who register.
