Sociology and anthropology graduates work in a wide variety of industries, in a wide variety of roles, after they graduate. Skills like effective writing, analyzing and evaluating ideas and data, conducting surveys and interviews, and developing new approaches to problems lend themselves to many jobs and environments, which you can jump start with your Co-op experience.

What industries do sociologists and anthropologists work in?

  • Higher Education Jobs in higher education can be student-facing or administrative. Some administrative opportunities include working in admissions or academic departments. Student-facing roles can work with student organizations, off-campus student services, service learning, and civic engagement.
  • Non-Profits and NGOs Professionals in this industry can work on civil rights issues, international reproductive rights, immigrant support, job readiness for unhoused or transitional populations, development, fundraising, and grant writing. They can work in institutions like museums, environmental organizations, or international development organizations.
  • Social Work and Direct Care In this sector, professionals work directly with their target populations and sometimes aim to mitigate social inequities. Professionals in these industries can include residential counselors, case managers, teachers, and mental health counselors. They can work in institutions like shelters, schools, hospitals, and day programs, among many others.
  • Law and Legal Services Those with sociology or anthropology degrees are equipped to pursue law school. Professionals may also work in the administrative and organizational capacities of law firms, like office assistants or clerks.
