WGSS executive committee member Professor Alicia Sasser Modestino was featured in a Northeastern News article entitled “How Will the Economy Bounce Back?” which discusses the economic effects of the current health crisis. Economists have predicted that the downturn will be a sharp one, but also a short one. According to Modestino, this prediction is dependent on the actions of government officials who can make choices to limit the damage. While of course reopening the economy is ideal, Modestino says that this will require much more widespread testing and contact tracing in order to make sure it is safe to do so. She says that lives and the livelihoods provided by the economy are intertwined, rather than interchangeable.
