Uta G. Poiger is Dean of the College of Social Science and Humanities and Professor of History at Northeastern University. With the college’s faculty, staff and students, she works to enhance the college’s and the university’s leadership in Experiential Liberal Arts. As the organization philosophy and integrative educational model of the college, the Experiential Liberal Arts is intertwined with Northeastern’s mission in Humanics. Under her leadership, the college has developed three areas of strategic focus: the intersections of resilience and sustainability; cultural transformations, governance and globalization; and network science, digital humanities and information ethics. Together with Richard Daynard, she led the committee that formulated Northeastern’s new general education curriculum NUpath, implemented in 2016.
In her research, Poiger examines 20th-century German culture and society from a transnational perspective, and makes the study of race and gender central to these explorations. In individually authored as well as collaborative books and articles, she has addressed questions of Americanization, globalization, imperialism, and the promises and challenges of comparative history. Her graduate and undergraduate teaching has included courses on modern European and German history, the Holocaust and comparative genocide, gender and sexuality, and historiography.
Poiger holds a PhD in History from Brown University and an MA in History from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She began her studies at Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, Germany. Before coming to Northeastern as chair of the History Department in 2011, Poiger taught for sixteen years at the University of Washington, Seattle, where she was the Giovanni and Amne Costigan Endowed Professor of History and Adjunct Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
Ellen Cushman, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion and a Cherokee Nation citizen, is Dean’s Professor of Civic Sustainability and a professor of English. She works with colleagues throughout the college on key initiatives in hiring, mentoring and supporting our faculty. She also provides leadership to the college’s faculty, students, and staff in the development of initiatives to promote and sustain a diverse, inclusive and civil campus. Cushman’s research explores institutional and community-based meaning making practices using activist qualitative methods. Her book, The Cherokee Syllabary: Writing the People’s Perseverance (Oklahoma UP, 2011), is based on six years of ethnohistorical research with her tribe and explores the evolution and importance of the Cherokee writing system. Her teaching and service includes public engagement courses in composition and rhetoric as well outreach-based workshops, initiatives, and programs. Cushman earned her PhD from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in rhetoric and communication. She previously worked at Michigan State University where she served as director of the Center for Applied and Inclusive Teaching and Learning in Arts and Humanities and was a professor of writing and rhetoric.

Laura Green, Associate Dean of Teaching, Learning, and Experiential Education and a professor of English, works with colleagues throughout the college and the university in strengthening our mission in the Experiential Liberal Arts; connecting cutting-edge classroom work and experiential learning; fostering excellence and innovation in teaching; expanding undergraduate research opportunities; and refining curricula and assessment. Green is a scholar of Victorian literature and women’s studies and is the author of two books. She is the book review co-editor of Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society. Green, who joined the Dean’s Office in July 2017, serves as a member of the executive committee of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program and the advisory board of the Northeastern Humanities Center and previously chaired the Department of English, 2009-2015. She holds a PhD in English from University of California, Berkeley.

Alisa K. Lincoln, Associate Dean of Research, is Director of the Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice Research (formerly the IUHR) in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences, and is an Inter-disciplinary Professor of Sociology and Health Sciences. She leads the College’s efforts, working with colleagues throughout the college, university and the community, to support and expand our research mission. This includes supporting activities related to grant and fellowship applications and awards, working with our research centers and institutes, and developing and supporting multidisciplinary cross-college collaborations. Lincoln’s research examines social exclusion, marginalization, and health with a focus on mental health and well-being. Her research teams explore the ways that social disadvantage impacts people’s mental health and their experiences in mental health care through the development of innovative models which increase the inclusion of communities and stakeholders in the process of research. She has over 20 years of continuous research funding from sources including NIMH, NIMHD, SAMHSA, and NIJ. Finally, she is the Chair-Elect of the Mental Health Section of the American Sociological Association, and an Elected Fellow in the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) and the American Psycho-Pathological Association (APPA). Lincoln holds a M.P.H from Boston University and a Ph.D. in Sociomedical Sciences from Columbia University.

Matthew Tobin, Associate Dean of Administration and Finance, oversees the college’s administrative operations including finance, human resources, space, and information technology. In his leadership role, Tobin is also responsible for helping set and implement strategy for CSSH. He arrived to Northeastern in 2015 with over 13 years of experience at Harvard University spanning all parts of the institution including academic departments, research centers and central administration. Most recently, he worked in Harvard’s Office of Financial Strategy and Planning managing a portfolio of schools with a combined annual budget of $1.9 billion and acting as a close adviser to the university’s leadership. Tobin holds an MBA from Boston College and a BS from Babson College.

Professor Thomas J. Vicino, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, works with faculty, staff, and students to foster excellence in the college’s graduate programs and to enhance their alignment with our Experiential Liberal Arts mission. He also serves as a professor in the Department of Political Science and is jointly appointed in the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs. He has held numerous administrative appointments previously, including serving as Chair of the Department of Political Science and as Director of the MPA Program. In 2014, Prof. Vicino was a U.S. Fulbright Core Scholar to Brazil, where he was a visiting professor of political economy in the Graduate Program in Social Sciences at Pontificia Universidade Catolica (PUC Minas) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
He teaches at the graduate level in the MPA, MPP, and MUPP Programs. At the undergraduate level, he teaches in the political science major and the urban studies minor. He co-leads a signature Dialogue of Civilizations program in partnership with Meiji University in Tokyo, Japan. He holds PhD and MPP degrees from the University of Maryland and a BSc degree from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.
Rory Smead, Director of the Rossetti Family Program for the Advancement of the Humanities, works to attract STEM and business students to topics and ideas in the humanities. His aim is to promote in these students a lasting interest in the liberal arts through exposure to valuable perspectives and concepts from the humanities. He is also associate professor in philosophy and religion whose interdisciplinary research explores philosophical questions surrounding the origin of cooperation and morality while drawing on methods from the social and biological sciences. He holds a PhD in philosophy and an MA in social science from the University of California Irvine. Before joining Northeastern in 2010 he spent a year as a tutorial fellow at the London School of Economics.
Elizabeth (Liz) Bucar, Dean’s Leadership Fellow and Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion, works with colleagues throughout the college to foster faculty fellowship and grant activity in the humanities. A religious ethicist, she studies gender and moral transformation within Islamic and Christian traditions and communities. Bucar, author of several books, has been awarded four humanities fellowships and her current research is supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation, via The Enhancing Life Project. She has served as an external proposal reviewer for a number of research funding organizations and was one of CSSH’s participants in the university-wide Research Leadership Development Initiative (ReDI) in 2014-15. Bucar received her PhD in religious ethics from the University of Chicago Divinity School in 2006. Prior to coming to Northeastern in 2012, Bucar was an assistant professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Jun Ma, Dean’s Leadership Fellow for Global Partnerships, collaborates with colleagues in different disciplines and across campuses to develop joint graduate programs, and strategizes about global partnerships for master’s graduate programs. He also serves as director of the MS in Economics program and associate professor of Economics. As an economist, his primary research interests are in the areas of international finance, open economy macroeconomics, and applied time series econometrics. He has published many peer-reviewed articles in leading academic journals and has served important roles in several international academic societies. He also held visiting positions and was invited to give academic presentations in universities and policy institutions around the world including Durham University (UK), Leibniz University of Hannover (Germany), MIT Sloan, Renmin University of China, and Norges Bank (Norway). Jun received his PhD in Economics from the University of Washington in 2007.

Mary Mello, Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs, primarily works with academic advising, admission yield efforts, retention, and cooperative education. She received her MA in English at Northeastern University. Before working as an assistant dean, she held several different positions at Northeastern including director of academic student services for the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, and previously the College of Arts and Sciences.

Michael Farah, Director of Marketing and Communications, leads all marketing and communications functions and projects for CSSH. He joined the college from Academic Approach, a Chicago-based test readiness company, and previously managed marketing campaigns and strategy for the College Board, including initiatives for its SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and Advanced Placement (AP) programs. Michael holds an MA in writing and publishing from Emerson College and bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and psychology from Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

Andrew Lawrence, Director of College Research Administration, is responsible for overseeing all sponsored research administration functions in the college for both pre-award and post-award administration, including serving as the primary liaison between the college and the Sponsored Programs office. He is also responsible for serving on research administration committees, maintaining federal sponsored research compliance and the tracking of research expenses. He has a bachelor’s degree in business management from John Carroll University and an MBA in international business from Baldwin Wallace University. Jennifer Akula, Associate Director of College Research Administration, supports the management of sponsored research activities in the college including proposal submission, post-award administration, as well as building systems that support the growing research needs of CSSH faculty and staff. Jennifer has a BA in mathematics from Boston University and an MS in nutrition policy from Tufts University. Jennifer previously worked for the Bouve Dean’s office as a research administrator for five years.

Kathleen Kenney, Associate Director for Faculty Affairs and Human Resources Administration, oversees the college’s human resources and faculty affairs operations and leads staff development initiatives. She holds a master of public administration degree from Northeastern’s School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Boston College. Prior to coming to CSSH, she worked as the assistant director of Northeastern’s ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development where she managed a portfolio of professional development programs including the Research Leadership Development Initiative (ReDI). Kathleen has presented at multiple conferences on professional development and co-authored an article on faculty mentoring published in the International Journal of Mentoring and Coaching in Education. Kathleen is pursuing a doctorate in education, concentrating in organizational leadership studies and focuses her research on career development.

Britain Grilli-Scott, Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships and College Initiatives, facilitates the implementation of cross-college and interdisciplinary opportunities for students and assists with the development of relationships and partnerships in Boston and at the other Northeastern campuses in Charlotte, Seattle, Silicon Valley, and Toronto. She is also responsible for collaborating with Enrollment Management, the PhD Network, and the other colleges at Northeastern. Bobby F. Anderson Jr., Administrative Assistant, is responsible for managing the front desk, provides administrative support to the Dean and Associate Deans for various projects, manages space in Renaissance Park, and acts as a liaison with building and garage management. Helen Chong, Senior Grants Administrator, is responsible for organizing and implementing operational procedures relating to grant and proposal development as well as providing pre- and post-award finance and administration support. She comes to us from Columbia University, where she supported the financial operations of a $40 million portfolio. Prior to Columbia, she worked at EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), where she was charged with managing European Commission and Swiss National Science Foundation grants for three research labs, ensuring financial compliance, planning strategic activities with international partners, and implementing workflow for laboratory policies, procedures, and systems. She holds a BS in biology from Pace University.

Evan Cutelis, Budget/Administrative Coordinator, is responsible for all daily accounting transactions including journal vouchers, reimbursements, budget transfers, and invoices. He also assists with tracking the Dean’s Office financial commitments, space management, and the computer replacement cycle. Gabrielle Fiorenza, Events and Administrative Operations Manager, serves as the college-wide lead on all CSSH events, providing training, resources, and collaborative support for all staff, managing all college-wide events for the CSSH Office of the Dean and handling programs within the Humanities Center at Northeastern University. She is also responsible for managing the CSSH event staff administrators group that acts as a unique collective for event resources across all CSSH events of any scope or size. She graduated from Simmons University, where she received a BA in English with minors in Studio Art and Communications. Dana Ritter, Finance and Administration Manager, oversees all departmental and program budgets, and works closely with the associate dean for administration and finance to project revenues and expenses. He joined the college in 2014 from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he most recently served as the chief financial manager for the College of Humanities and Fine Arts overseeing general business operations. He worked closely with department chairs and center directors to build and manage annual operating and capital budgets, partnered with the dean to develop short- and long-term strategic plans, and served on the Chancellor’s Budget Task Force.

Demetrios Katos, Director of Giving and College Initiatives, is responsible for helping the dean and her leadership team in translating the academic initiatives of CSSH into fundraising opportunities for supporting the College’s students and faculty. Bethany Basile, Officer for Corporate and Foundation Advancement, identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards private institutional funding sources at the local, national and international level in support of the people and programs of CSSH and interdisciplinary university initiatives.
