The Center for Atypical Language Interpreting (CALI) partnered with WCI, an organization that provides employment opportunities for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Through this collaboration, Deaf and DeafBlind WCI clients participated in social time and supervised mock interpreting scenarios with CALI trainees.
The experience was mutually beneficial: trainees gained real-world practice in a supportive environment, while Deaf participants strengthened communication and interview skills and were compensated for their time.
Richard, a long-time WCI participant, has engaged in CALI projects for over seven years. His experiences have ranged from in-person events and a visit to Northeastern University to virtual interviews during COVID and a filmed mock interview at WCI.
Richard valued the opportunity to earn income while trying new experiences, building confidence, and developing strong communication skills. He especially enjoyed learning about topics like Human Rights, connecting with the Deaf community, and participating in filmed interviews. His story reflects how inclusive opportunities can foster growth, confidence, and community.
