Kitty Dukakis, tireless advocate who shared her struggles with the public, dies at 88

During the 1988 presidential campaign, Kitty Dukakis gave countless speeches and interviews on behalf of her husband, Massachusetts Governor Michael S. Dukakis, the Democratic nominee, striking back forcefully at his Republican opponents while transforming herself into the very model of the modern political spouse.

As the state’s first lady, she championed a wide range of causes, including aid to the homeless and advocating on behalf of political refugees.

It was as a private citizen, though, that Mrs. Dukakis made her most indelible mark, writing and speaking candidly — often painfully so — about her struggles with alcoholism and depression, the treatment options she’d sought, and the relapses she had suffered.
