Advocates called it the Fair Share Amendment, which was the official name of Question 1 on the 2022 Massachusetts election ballot.
Others called it the “Millionaires’ Tax.” By either name, Question 1 was the only suggested tax increase on any 2022 ballot in the nation.
Passed by the voters, Question 1 means Massachusetts taxpayers who earn above $1 million will pay a 9% state tax, nearly double the 5% across-the-board tax as stipulated by the state constitution.
This is more than just a new law. It was a constitutional amendment, and the debate continues as to its ultimate effect.
