In Memoriam: Donna Marie Bishop

With the passing of Donna Marie Bishop on September 29, 2025, the field of criminology has lost one of its kindest and most influential voices.  She was extremely generous with her time—all too willing to review the drafts of colleagues and students alike, while pursuing a highly distinguished scholarly career, most notably as an advocate for youth justice.

Before earning her Ph.D. in criminal justice from the State University of New York at Albany (1982), Donna worked as a counselor in a women’s prison, a juvenile probation officer, and for the federal government in juvenile justice planning.  Her early academic appointments were at the University of Florida (1982–1995) and then the University of Central Florida (1995–1999).  In 1999, Northeastern University recruited Donna, where she continued to teach, advise, and publish widely.

Donna’s scholarship record includes two books and more than 75 articles.  Her scholarship covered a wide range of topics, most notably on juvenile law reform, race and gender inequities in justice processing, and juvenile transfer policy and practice.  Most significantly, her research on minors transferred to the adult justice system influenced generations of scholars and policy debates about how states punish juveniles in the adult criminal justice system.  In addition, she served on the board of the American Society of Criminology, edited the journal Justice Quarterly, and was on the editorial boards of six criminology and criminal justice journals.

While at Northeastern Donna took on a multitude of administrative tasks.  She worked to create the university’s doctoral program in Criminology and Public Policy.  In the earlier stages of the program, she taught first year doctoral students in the required theory course.  Later she worked long hours as the University’s first ombuds person—a role that she enjoyed until her retirement in 2017.

Beyond her professional work, Donna was deeply committed and actively volunteered in a variety of community service organizations. She was most of proud of her work as a member of the Board of Trustees at Regency at Methuen and a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for abused and neglected children.

She will be greatly missed by her colleagues here at Northeastern University, and by all those who had the good fortune to know her. The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice has established the Professor Donna M. Bishop Doctoral Excellence Award to honor her memory. More information about the award and ways you can contribute to this ongoing fund will be forthcoming.
