The Department of Economics at Northeastern focuses on the application of economics to real-world issues of social importance. Our students become skilled in analytical modeling, data analysis, and econometric estimation in the context of a wide range of economic problems.

Michael P. Stone
Interim Chair and Teaching Professor of Economics

Our undergraduate program equips students with valuable skills, knowledge, and experience—”human capital” in the vernacular of the economist. Our students take core courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and statistical analysis. They then expand upon their knowledge by selecting from a rich set of upper-level classes focusing on several different fields, culminating with a capstone. In addition to offering a bachelor’s degree solely in economics, we also offer several combined majors, where students can combine economics with business, math, or data science, to name a few. Students’ classroom studies, in conjunction with their real-world co-op experience, lay the foundation for successful entry into the workforce. Additionally, our undergraduate curriculum helps to prepare students for graduate work in economics, as well as postgraduate degrees in law, business, and public policy.

At the graduate level, our master’s program provides students with the advanced skills and experience necessary for professional advancement in a broad range of rewarding careers. High-achieving undergraduates can choose to complete an accelerated master’s degree by joining our PlusOne program. Our Ph.D. program offers rigorous training, with an emphasis on applied microeconomics, and readies students for careers as professional economists in academia, policy institutions, government, data analysis, and consulting.

On this site, you will find information about our programs, our faculty and their research, and noteworthy accomplishments by members of our economics community—faculty and students alike. Upcoming events are periodically updated here as well, so check back frequently. I wholeheartedly welcome you to discover more about our department, and to join us on our collective journey studying the broad and diverse discipline of economics!
