Welcome New Faculty 2025

We are pleased to welcome several new colleagues to the Department of Economics and to congratulate one of our faculty members on a well-deserved promotion.

Full-Time Faculty

  • Roy Gernhardt, Visiting Lecturer – Specializes in labor and development economics with a student-centered approach to teaching.
  • Richeng Piao, Assistant Teaching Professor – Teaches macroeconomics, game theory, and applied data analytics with an emphasis on experiential learning and real-world application.
  • Jacob Thompson, Visiting Lecturer – A behavioral macroeconomist whose research focuses on belief formation in economic dynamics and DSGE modeling.

Part-Time Faculty

  • Brookelyn Adams – PhD candidate at the University of Missouri who values creative, student-centered approaches to teaching.
  • M. Shahid Alam – We welcome back Emeritus Professor Shahid Alam who will be teaching Economic History of the Middle East this fall.
  • Onsel Gulbiten – Brings 17+ years of expertise in investment strategy and macroeconomic policy across global markets.
  • Sam Richardson – Health economist and award-winning teacher currently writing an introductory health economics textbook.
  • Qianwei Shen (Seattle campus) – Data scientist and economist with industry experience at Netflix, TikTok, Amazon, and Meta.

Congratulations

  • Xiaolin Shi – Promoted to Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Economics.
