Welcome to the MS in Urban Planning and Policy (MUPP), which is housed in the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs (SPPUA) and the School of Architecture at Northeastern University. Our program is dedicated to the pursuit of just and sustainable solutions to today’s critical urban problems, including challenges of affordable housing provision, equitable and sustainable economic growth, sustainable transportation, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
Students in the MUPP program have the opportunity to develop substantial expertise in one four specialization areas, each of which reflect areas of research and practice of interdisciplinary faculty across the university. These include Urban Analytics, Urban Sustainability and Resilience, Urban Design and Physical Planning, and Urban Development Policy and Planning.
Experiential education is a hallmark of the MUPP program. Consistent with the College of Social Sciences and Humanities commitment to the Experiential Liberal Arts (ELA), our program provides a range of experiential learning opportunities throughout the curriculum, ranging from part-time internships to client-driven small group capstone projects, and, for some students, full-time professional experience through Northeastern’s signature cooperative education program at the College of Social Sciences and Humanities or the College of Arts, Media, and Design.
Furthermore, SPPUA offers a robust internship program for those who wish to work part or full time during the summer or regular semester. There are also numerous opportunities to conduct research through our research centers, including the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy, the Boston Area Research Initiative, the Global Resilience Institute, and the Social Impact Lab. Our exchange programs in Amsterdam and Leuven allow students to learn from the rich examples of these two vibrant cities.
I welcome you to explore the wealth of opportunities available to MUPP students.
